Slavery in the Fishing Industry is a Growing Problem

Slavery in the fishing industry is a serious problem, big enough that if people were aware of it one advocate hopes that they stop buying fish. That’s coming from a recreational fisherman who doesn’t eat fish unless he catches it himself.

Advocates against overfishing have joined forces with anti-labor trafficking advocates because the issues they are both fighting for are contributing to each other. If we stop sea slavery, we can lessen the impact of overfishing. If we stop all overfishing, there would be no more sea slavery.

Here is an article that discusses who’s doing it (Asia mostly & the U.S.), what’s contributing to it (government subsidies, fish farms, etc.), how serious it is (very), and gives solutions (technology like Fishtek Marine and the use of territorial use rights in fisheries management or TURF).

Sign HT for Human Trafficking

An Anti-Trafficking Rotary eClub in Florida has come up with this sign language post which is a new way for victims to ask for help. By signing the letters HT, the victim can alert police or someone like you that they need help. Traffickers would be none the wiser of the call for help.
